Correct placement helps for different styles of ball strike. Next to the ball keeps the ball low. Behind the ball determines loft. Further to the side allows for backspin. Non-kicking foot show be pointing in direction the players wants the ball to go.

Strike the middle to keep the ball low. Strike the middle of the ball for loft.
Heel down, toe up
Ensures the centre of the foot connects with the ball. Young player have a tendency to dangle their foot with a weak ankle, leaving the toe pointing down. Heel down and toe up means the ankle is locked, allowing players to determine power and accuracy.
