Practice of the Month – Chaos Game

This months practice lends itself to the idea of chaos theory, namely underlying patterns and repetitions presenting themselves despite the chaotic nature that occurs in this small sided game.  With 2 games taking place on the same pitch, players must process an awful lot of information. While this is happening, they must also recognise the pictures that have been painted to them in previous practices.

The progressions throw the players into further chaos as they must react quickly to changing the direction that they are playing.

Set Up

Set up a 20x20 playing area.  Each side of the playing area has a goal.  2 teams play a regular game against each other on the same pitch.  Teams have 1 goal to attack, 1 goal to defend.  The team out of possession is allowed to have one of their players become a GK, so that the team in possession has an attacking overload.  Play for 5 mins and switch opponents.

Progression 1

Coach calls "switch!" and the teams out of possession switch the goal they are defending

Progression 2

Coach calls "switch!" and the teams in possession switch the goal they are attacking

Coaching Points

Maintain width in possession

Observe space, team-mate, defenders, goal and other players to make decision

When to pass/dribble/shoot

Speed of transition from defense to attack/attack to defense

Considerations

Play 3v3/4v4 depending on the age of players
