Practice of the Month: Playing out from the Back Rondo

This months session is a possession based practice that encourages using the GK to keep possession and recognise opportunities to move the ball forward.

Beginning with a simple 4 v 2, players are required to look for opportunities to switch the play or split the defenders.  If the defending players win the ball, they transition into attacking mode and attempt to score.  Similarly, the team who are now out of possession look to win the ball back.

Developing the practice, players then look to attack the opponents goal.  2 balls means that players are constantly involved (ideal in the winter months!) before progressing to 1 ball and resembling an unrestricted game of football.

Set Up

Teams are set up 4 v 2 in front of a goal.  Both teams attempt to keep the ball away from the defenders. They score a point for switching the play (direct or via GK) or splitting the defenders.

If defenders win the ball, they attempt to score in the goal and the 4 attempt to stop them.

Progression 1

If ball is switched or defenders split, 2 players can attack the opponents goal.

Opposition decide whether to keep possession or defend the goal.

Progression 2

1 Ball
