Practice of the Month – Ready to React

Incorporating Goalkeepers is tough.  Many of us have minimal experience of coaching them and it is also a specialist position.  Not every young player feels comfortable playing in goal, where as for some it is all they want to do.  Therefore, having practices where we can focus on Goalkeepers while making sure that those playing outfield are engaged are a massive tool to have in our locker.

Ready to React does just that.  Players get the chance to take plenty of shots at the Goalkeeper.  Keeper's must be in their set position as shots come in at any time.  The progressions encourage development of their distribution, handling, 1v1's and diving skills.

Set up

Set up a 15x15 playing area at the edge of the penalty box.  Place a mini goal either side of the penalty box.  Split players into even teams.

Teams attempt to make 3 successive passes before they are able to shoot at goal.  Once a shot is taken, 1 attacker and 1 defender can follow in to rebound/clear the ball.  If the GK catches the ball, they throw/roll the ball into one of the mini-goals.

Progression 1

All players can crash the goal after a shot is made

Progression 2

Place obstacles in front of the goal to obstruct the Goalkeepers' view

Coaching Points

Set Position - Hands out, knees bent

Get on the line of the ball and the centre of the goal

Distance off the goal line - arc of the GK

Catch if possible, push away if not

Considerations

Use a time restriction instead of number of passes to ensure more shots are coming in

Allow players to break out of playing area for 1v1 development
