Activity 1 – 1v1 Protect the Gate
Players are split into 2 teams, each standing next to their gate. 1 player from each team starts inside the gate.
The attacking player attempts to run through the opponents gate without being tagged. If they do, they score a point.
If the tagger is successful, they score a point. Change lines and the next pair go.
Progression
Add a ball for the Attackers
Place a time limit on attackers to encourage defenders to think about different ways to stop their opponent
Activity 2 – 1v1 Defend the Goal
The Coach passes a ball into the playing area and the 1st player in each team play 1v1 to goal.
Return to team once a goal is scored or the ball leaves the playing area
Coach Tips
Pass the ball towards a particular team to encourage the defending player to close down under control
Vary the service (on floor, in air) to keep challenging players
Keep groups small – no more than 3 – to allow for quick rotations
If numbers allow, let one of the players pass the ball in
Activity 3 – 3v3 No GK
3v3 Game with no Goalkeepers.
Allow players to pass or dribble on re-starts to keep the tempo high.
Considerations
Add a no-go zone around the goals to stop players standing in front of them
Coach Tip
Use these games as a chance to observe. Keep a tally of how many times player delay and win the ball
