Practice of the Month – Penalty Box 1 v 1

One of the key aims we are looking at this season is for our players to master as many 1v1 situations as possible.  In order to do this, I want them to experience pressure from behind, in front, the side and at angle.  This practice helps achieve all of those in an important area of the pitch.

The activity begins with the attacking player receiving a pass with their back to goal.  From here, the defensive pressure will constantly change based on how the play develops.  By incorporating teams, players also develop their skills in transition as they alternate between defense and attack.

Set Up

Players are split into 2 teams and partner up with a player on the opposite team.  One pair starts inside the penalty area.  The remaining players spread out around the outside of the penalty area with a ball each.

The attacking player in the penalty area receives a pass from a team mate.  They play 1 v 1 against their opposing team partner to goal.  If the defender wins the ball, they look to pass to a team mate on the outside.  After the first turn is done, the roles reverse.  Play until all 4 balls have been played.

Progression 1

The passing player supports their team mate to create a 2v1

Progression 2

An additional defender runs in to create a 2 v 2
